How we score saunas

Heat 30%, cold 20%, calm 20%, access 15%, stay 15%.

The Sauna Score rates the sauna experience from 0 to 10. It is not a hotel rating. It combines five factors, and it is published only once we have checked the sauna.

The five factors

Sauna Score weighting
FactorWeightWhat counts
Heat30%Type of sauna (wood-fired and Finnish rank above infrared), maximum temperature, whether you can pour water on the stones
Cold20%Cold plunge, cold shower, or the sea or a lake within walking distance
Calm20%Private or shared, adults only, how busy it gets, the setting
Access15%Opening times, included or extra fee, booking needed, minimum age
Stay15%Guest rating from booking partners, weighted by the number of reviews

What 'Provisional' means

Until we have checked the heat, privacy, access and cold water of a sauna, its score stays provisional and we do not show a number. That is most stays today, because we check them one by one.

The Heat and Cold rating

Checked stays also show a Heat and Cold bar: how strong the heat is on the left, and how good the cooling off is on the right.

Heat 80
Cold 60

Sauna Score vs guest rating

The guest rating comes from booking partners and covers the whole stay: the room, the breakfast, the staff. We show it separately, with the number of reviews, and never as stars. A hotel can have a high guest rating and a weak sauna, or the other way round.
