The name Belfast is the Anglicized version of the Irish name Béal Feirste, which translates to “mouth of the Farset”. This term refers to the sandbank that formed at the confluence of the Farset and Lagan rivers. This area is present-day Donegall Quay and flows into the Belfast Lough. The area around what is now Belfast was settled as early as the Bronze Age. Giant’s Ring, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic circular monument, stands near what is now the capital of Northern Ireland, and the remains of Iron Age forts can still be seen on the hills near Belfast. Belfast remained a small and insignificant settlement throughout the Middle Ages, although John de Courcy built a castle on the site of what is now Castle Street in the 12th century.
